Artist’s Comment

Thirty years ago I found a small wooden box in an antique store with a ship captains compass inside it. I was very disappointed that I could not afford to buy it. The thought of ancient mariners, navigating a long journey across a vast seascape is both frightening and admirable. Like one’s life’s journey, it takes great courage to embark into the unknown. And like the life journey, we each find our way the best we can. However, we do not need an instrument like the compass, as we already know which way to go….if we will only listen.

The image of that ship captain’s instrument has been with me throughout the development of the ThoughtBoxes presented here. I suppose I had to build my own, having missed the opportunity to purchase the one I found in the antique store.
